What Matters

Sometimes it's good to put it down, in black and white. The things that matter. Why we do what we do.

DETAILS

Each candle is prepared and finished by hand.

Not everyone will notice it, but that doesn't mean it's not important. You've got to get the details right. We believe they add up over time in every customer our product touches. That's why the details matter, we sweat the details.

RELAX

Life's far too serious. We work too long and too hard to come back to a house, not a home. We want to restore that balance. Take time to enjoy the moments when life pauses. Enjoy the little things. Share them with friends, family and loved ones.

PATIENCE

Stay true to what you believe. It's easy to find a shortcut, but often the best way is the hard way. We've built something we believe in. It will take time to work. It will take time to grow. We're ok with that. We won't deviate.

How We Started

It's a story of passion and curiosity.

Sometimes the best way to learn something is to actually to do it. So we did.

We spent the best part of a 18 months perfecting Ampersand.

We spent the best part of a 18 months perfecting Ampersand.

Starting out on a range oven in the kitchen and armed with nothing more than a can do attitude we spent the best part of 18 months perfecting the art of making candles and we’re still learning.

We had to get it right. We couldn’t compromise.

Everything was researched, painstakingly logged and detailed. We went through 32 different types of wick, from Egyptian cotton cored to self trimming flat wicks. Each candle has a specific wick to ensure it burns just right. Even then lady luck always plays a role. Sometimes there might be a slight dip or surface imperfection, the wax can bubble when it’s lit or pull away from the sides of a container. That’s the nature of soy wax, it’s a tricky one. If it was easy, everyone would use it.

We use a blend of soy waxes, paraffin wax and vybar.

We’re constantly experimenting with our blends, pour temperatures and overall approach - it never effects how the candle smells but it gives each one a uniqueness that can’t be matched. The Japanese call it wabi-sabi.

Why Candles?

It all started with a simple idea. Candles. Why not?

We wanted to prove a point that you can start something from nothing. With a background in product design and interior architecture, we have developed a deep love of material and craft. We wanted to scratch that itch of building our own brand. We loved doing things. Using our hands, getting them dirty, learning a craft and the hard work that ensued. We were fed up of sitting at a desk for eight hours a day. Watching a digital blur fly by on the screen in front of us.

Whatever happened to making things? Honest, humble products you could trace back to source and be proud of.

We wanted to make beautiful candles from quality ingredients. Candles that appeal to men and women. Candles without nondescript, gimmicky names. No garish colours and tacky containers. Products we’d be proud to share with loved ones and display in our homes. Simple, subtle fragrances that fill a room with scent. Generously sized so they won’t run out after a few hours burning. Candles made in small batches, by hand, with care.

The Five Senses.

Fresh pine. The power of smell.

Fresh pine. The power of smell.

There’s something so powerful about smells.

Pine at christmas time.

Fresh cut grass in the summer.

That distinctive smell after a rain storm. There’s even a word for it… Petrichor.

Smell is the only one of our senses hard wired into our brains. We get a quick, intensive reaction to smells. It’s something we’re drawn to.

And then there's that that soothing light, a gentle flicker in the corner of a room. A candle makes any moment softer, more informal, relaxed and cosy.

Coupled with that nostalgia from a certain smell transporting you back to a time and place.

Few objects have that ability.

We loved that about candles.

Our First Year.

Hector, our four legged addition.

Hector, our four legged addition.

It was a busy year. We got married. Bought a house in rural Derbyshire. Sam left his job as a senior designer. The freedom of self employment and running his own design studio trumped salaried servitude. We bought a new four legged addition into the family, Hector. And then we set about renovating the house. The year flew by. We probably bit off more than we could chew.

The design studio did well in it’s first year and yet we couldn’t shake the idea of launching our own brand. Building something from scratch. From the ground up. Something made well.

No excuses.

No excuses.

Things made well. It was something you didn’t see much of these days. Buy cheap, buy twice they say. We had a love for well designed products. Products made with love and passion. Products that did one thing well. It was a simple mantra that few could meet. We strived to achieve this in everything I did.
